Topic: Starfall.com
Description: Starfall.com is a great interactive site, which teaches and inspires a love of reading. It is primarily designed for first graders, but it also a good tool to use with emergent readers, kindergartners, second graders, and struggling readers. Starfall can be incorporated during the school day, but is also a great technological tool for parents and children to use at home.
What it Teaches: A Balanced Literacy Program:
1) Phonemic Awareness
2) Phonics
3) Vocabulary
4) Fluency
5) Comprehension
Components of the Site:
1) ABC: for emergent readers
2) Learn to read: for emergent to early stage readers
3) It’s fun to read: for early & transitional readers
4) I’m reading : for early/transitional/self-extending readers
Just For Fun: In addition to these components, there are a lot of additional links, which further expand on teaching and making reading fun! Word Hunt, Pumpkin, and Turkey are some of my favorites.
Taking it further: For older students who may also be struggling in reading, Starfall may not be an appropriate tool to use with them. However, these students still require the same essential knowledge that is taught to younger students in Starfall. Here are some additional sites, which may be helpful to use with older students:
3) Lexia
4) Bookwink
